What is ScarWork?

ScarWork therapy is a gentle, specialised form of manual therapy designed to improve the quality, mobility, and function of scar tissue. Developed to work with the body's connective tissue system (fascia), ScarWork helps address the restrictions that scars can create long after the initial healing process has finished.

Scars are a natural part of the body's repair process following surgery, injury, burns, or trauma. While a scar may appear healed on the surface, the underlying tissues can remain tight, restricted, or disconnected from the surrounding structures. These restrictions may contribute to discomfort, altered movement patterns, postural changes, or sensations such as numbness and tightness.

How ScarWork Can Help

ScarWork aims to encourage scar tissue to integrate more naturally with the surrounding fascia and tissues. Using a very light and precise touch, the treatment helps soften adhesions and improve tissue mobility without force or discomfort.

Clients often seek ScarWork to help with:

  • Tightness or pulling sensations around a scar

  • Numbness, altered sensation, or sensitivity

  • Reduced mobility or flexibility

  • Swelling or tissue congestion

  • Post-surgical recovery

  • Cosmetic appearance of scars

  • Discomfort associated with old or recent scars

Many people notice improvements not only in the scar itself but also in the way their body moves and feels as a whole.

The ScarWork Approach

Unlike deep tissue techniques, ScarWork uses a subtle, gentle contact with the skin and underlying tissues. The treatment works progressively through different tissue layers, helping the body release restrictions and restore more natural movement and function.

ScarWork can be effective for many types of scars, including:

  • Surgical scars

  • Caesarean section scars

  • Joint replacement scars

  • Mastectomy and reconstruction scars

  • Burn scars

  • Injury and trauma scars

Both recent and long-established scars often respond positively to treatment.

Benefits of ScarWork

ScarWork may help to:

  • Improve tissue mobility and flexibility

  • Reduce feelings of tightness and restriction

  • Improve comfort and body awareness

  • Support healthy tissue function

  • Reduce swelling and congestion

  • Improve the appearance and texture of scars

  • Encourage long-term changes in tissue quality

Each treatment is tailored to the individual, with the aim of helping the body adapt, move, and function more freely.
